Miss. defense, aerospace expanding

The Mississippi Economic Council’s 60th annual meeting kicked off Thursday morning with talk of some of the state’s most vital — but sometimes overlooked — economic cogs: defense and aerospace.
Officials with Rolls-Royce North America’s naval marine program and the Columbus-Lowndes Development Link spoke of past accomplishments and future plans for facilities in Pascagoula and the Golden Triangle region, respectively.
Planned expansions at three aerospace companies in Lowndes County will mean 1,000 new jobs over the next 10 years, said Joe Max Higgins, president and CEO of the development agency.
A separate forum focused on education and work-force training.
The event continues today with more meetings, a luncheon featuring Stuart Varney of Fox News and the governor’s summit on stimulus aid at the Jackson Convention Complex.
